GREENIT! CHAMOMILE
Chamomile flower (Matricaria chamomilla or Matricaria recutita) is one of our best-known and most popular herbs, widely used for its anti-inflammatory and soothing effects.
Detailed characteristics:
- Appearance: A plant belonging to the family of the Asteraceae, growing 10–50 cm tall, widespread throughout almost all of Europe. Its stem is thin, branched, and its leaves are finely lobed. Its inflorescence is characteristic: the yellow, cone-shaped inflorescence is surrounded by white tongue-shaped flowers, the center of the inflorescence is hollow. Its scent is pleasant, strong, with a characteristic aroma.
Active ingredients: Essential oils (chamazulene, bisabolol), flavonoids, coumarins, mucilages.
Possible beneficial effects:
Anti-inflammatory: Excellent for inflammation both internally (tea) and externally (compression, washing).
Digestion: Supports the digestive system, has an antispasmodic effect, helps with bloating, stomach pain and intestinal problems.
Calming: Contributes to restful sleep, reduces stress and tension.
Respiratory: When inhaled, it helps relieve sore throats and cold symptoms.
Skin care: Can be used for inflamed, eczematous skin, as well as for eye compresses.
Possible applications:
Tea: Consumed as a decoction.
Inhalation: Inhaling the steam.
Poultice/Wash: Applied externally.
Creams/Ointments: Ingredient in skin care products.
Collection, drying and storage:
Collection: May is the main season, but the flowers can be collected when they are in bloom, from April to June. The inflorescences should be picked after they have fully opened, but before the yellow tubular flowers open. It is advisable to tear off the flower stalk without the inflorescence stalk (stem), or with a max. 1-2 cm stem.
- Drying: Dry in a thin layer, in a shady, well-ventilated place, on gauze or on a tray.
- Storage: Store in a dry, cool place, in a paper bag, canvas bag or in a tightly closed glass/box. It is important to keep the place protected from light and moisture.
