GREENIT! ELDERFLOWER
The inflorescence of the black elderberry (Sambucus nigra) is one of the best-known and most versatile Central European medicinal plants. Its characteristically fragrant, umbel-shaped inflorescences, which bloom around May-June, are not only the basis for delicious syrups, but also have excellent medicinal properties.
Detailed characteristics:
- Appearance: The flowers are arranged in flat, umbrella-like umbels (saucers), the diameter of which can reach 10-20 cm. They are characterized by tiny, 5-6 mm, creamy white or yellowish white petals, with an intense, sweet, aromatic scent. The flowers are male and female, five-membered, the stamens are yellow.
- Active ingredients: Flavonoids (e.g. quercetin, rutin), essential oils, chlorogenic acids (e.g. phenolic acids), mucilages, tannins, minerals (e.g. potassium).
- Possible beneficial effects:
- Sweat-inducing and antipyretic: Stimulates sweating in case of colds and flu, thus reducing fever.
- Expectorant and respiratory aid: Relieves cough, clears airways, excellent for bronchitis.
- Immune booster: Supports the body’s defenses due to its high flavonoid content.
- Diuretic and cleansing: Helps detoxify.
- Possible beneficial effects:
- Possible applications:
- Tea: An infusion made from dried flowers is the best-known remedy for colds.
- Syrup: A base for refreshing drinks made from fresh flowers.
- Cuisine: A flavoring for fried elderflowers, jams, and cakes.
- Collection and storage
- Collection: Collect in sunny, dry weather, preferably in the morning, after the dew has dried. Do not collect the umbels after rain, as this is when they have less pollen and may turn brown.
- Drying: Dry the flowers in a thin layer, on clean paper or netting, in a shady, well-ventilated, dry place. Avoid direct sunlight, as the flowers may turn brown. They are dry when they can be easily torn off the stem.
- Storage: Crumble the completely dried flowers from the thicker stems. Store in an airtight glass, metal box or paper bag, in a cool, dry, dark place.
