GREENIT! THYME
Thyme (common thyme: Thymus vulgaris, wild thyme: Thymus serpyllum) is an evergreen semi-shrub belonging to the family of the thyme family, popular as both a spice and a medicinal herb. It originates from the Mediterranean region, but is also widespread in our country, and is an extremely fragrant, drought-tolerant plant.
Detailed characteristics:
- Appearance: A perennial semi-shrub growing to a height of 20-50 cm, forming a prostrate or hemispherical bush. It has woody stems, often with rooting shoots. It is characterized by small, lanceolate or ovate, leathery leaves, which often have recurved edges. Its small purple, pink or white-lipped flowers, blooming from May to September, form pseudobulbs. It has a strong, aromatic scent, which is due to the essential oils it contains.
- Active ingredients: Essential oils (0.1-0.6%), including thymol and carvacrol, which have antiseptic and bactericidal effects. Other significant components include anti-inflammatory tannins, saponins, rosmarinic acid and flavonoids.
- Possible beneficial effects:
- Respiratory diseases: Excellent expectorant, mucolytic, antispasmodic, used for sore throats, coughs and bronchitis.
- Digestion: Stimulates digestion, effective against bloating and abdominal cramps.
- Externally: Used as a compress, wash, and in baths to improve circulation due to its disinfectant effect.
- Possible applications:
- Tea: As a decoction, mainly for respiratory symptoms and digestive disorders.
- Essential oil, alcoholic extract: For inhalation.
- Poultice/Wash: Applied externally.
- Creams/Ointments: Ingredient in skin care products.
- Cuisine: Spice for meat dishes (lamb, chicken), stews, soups, marinades and vegetable dishes.
- Cultivation and care:
- Light and heat requirements: Light-requiring, heat-loving plant, an element of Mediterranean-style gardens.
- Soil: Prefers well-drained, calcareous, drier soil.
- Water requirements: Very drought-tolerant, cannot stand stagnant water.
- Propagation: By sowing seeds in spring, or by dividing the stem and cuttings in late summer.
